Kristína Böhmer

Kristína Böhmer is a reporter for the Investigative Center of Ján Kuciak and winner of the 2025 Journalism Award for Best Commentary.

Her journalistic style was shaped by field experience across continents – from Taiwan and the Balkans to Tanzania and Cuba.

She works on cross-border investigative projects recognized with international grants and journalism awards, and her work has been published by prestigious outlets such as Foreign Policy, OCCRP, and Balkan Insight.

Believing in “slow journalism,” she strives to delve as deeply as possible into every topic in order to bear witness.

She has long focused on mapping digital threats, human rights, systemic violence, and the fate of people oppressed by authoritarian regimes.

These issues are also at the heart of her debut book, Na dne mora (At the Bottom of the Sea, Absynt, 2026), which marks the culmination of her long-standing interest in Cuba.

Cigars, salsa and rum, but also a food crisis, poverty and omnipresent propaganda. Kristína Böhmer’s reportage book Na dne mora (At the Bottom of the Sea) combines the author’s journey through Cuba, marked by the pandemic and mass protests, with the island’s complex history from colonisation to Castro’s revolution.

Instead of a sterile holiday in a seaside resort, it offers an authentic view of the country through the testimonies of persecuted dissidents, exiles and ordinary Cubans waiting in queues for basic food supplies or for an opportunity to leave.

The book confronts the regime’s propaganda with everyday reality, explores the possibilities of travelling outside state-run facilities and, alongside politics and history, introduces readers to Cuban culture, music and religion.

It thus serves as an uncompromising guide to an island that does not hide its true face.
