Tomáš Gabriel

Tomáš Gabriel (1983) is a Czech poet and literary critic specializing in contemporary Czech poetry. He is the author of the poetry collections Tak černý kůň tak pozdě v noci (A Horse So Black, So Late at Night; Literární salon, 2012), Obvyklé hrdinství (Ordinary Heroism; Host, 2016), Prequel (Dusot, 2018), Broňka aneb konec starousedlictví v Čechách (Broňka, or the End of Old-Settlerism in Bohemia; Dusot, 2020), Údolí pokusu o výsadbu bříz (The Valley of an Attempt to Plant Birch Trees; Fra, 2024), and Venkovní stání (Outdoor Parking; Dusot, 2025). He has also published the prose work Čest chlapa (A Man's Honour; Dauphin, 2021) and the Czech–Ukrainian children's fold-out book Ořezávátko pro Alisu (A Pencil Sharpener for Alisa; Dusot, 2022). Together with Petr Borkovec, he co-edited The Best Czech Poems 2015 (Nejlepší české básně 2015; Host, 2015). He regularly publishes literary criticism in literary journals and on his blog. In 2025, he translated Anne Carson's verse novel Autobiography of Red into Czech (Argo, 2025).
